They are rescued by a rancher – woman who needs help to keep the Visitors from eating her horses.. Kyle goes on to Phoenix while Mike stays behind to organize the local folk.. Meanwhile, just as Diana is about to execute Lydia, Martin’s brother Phillip arrives to conduct an investigation.. He informs them that Lydia is allowed a new trial, trial by combat that is! Before either of them kills the other, Phillip decides to look at the evidence, and makes the two ladies work together in the mean time.. Plot: En route to Tucson with a shipment of much – needed weapons, Mike Donovan and Kyle Bates are stopped by a patrol car.. When the two men pull their truck over to the side of the road, they are made to put their hands atop their heads and the officer, Deputy Karnes, demands half of their bounty as a ” toll..” Mike pretends to comply, but manages to kick the deputy’s gun out of his hand.. There is a brief scuffle and then Mike and Kyle are able to escape in the truck.. The patrol car gives chase as the sheriff deputy shoots one of their tires forcing the truck into a pond area.. Their transportation halted and themselves cornered, the two grab their guns and shoot it out with the law.. But soon a third party shows up on horseback to aid the Resistance duo.. The officers find themselves caught in a cross – fire.. The cops flee the scene in their car.. The cavalry is Kathy Courtney, a local rancher.. Mike and Kyle are introduced to their saviour – Kathy Courtney, who owns the ranch they are on.. Kathy explains that the police force, led by Sheriff ” Big John “ Roland, is collaborating with the Visitors: most guns in the area have been confiscated and the people have given up hope.. Mike offers to trade Kathy some of their weapons in exchange for the use of Kathy’s tractor.. On board the Mothership, Lydia is confined to a cell following her arrest for the murder of Charles.. Diana visits Lydia in her cell and offers her the option of suicide by scorpion sting, to avoid an embarrassing trial… Lydia is furious, insisting it is Diana who killed Charles.. She tries to lunge at Diana but a device around her waist prevents her from reaching her.. Diana leaves the scorpion with Lydia and tells her that she will return in the morning.. Kathy takes Mike and Kyle to her place where they make repairs on their vehicle and enjoy a home – cooked meal.. While Kathy prepares dinner, she explains a little more of their situation: when the Visitor forces first arrived the people of the town fought them in earnest, until Kathy’s husband was killed and the fight left them.. Now the human collaborators are demanding ” taxes “ for the Visitors in the form of food and horses, which Kathy refuses to give.. The other ranchers refuse to fight because they have no leader.. They meet Kathy’s daughter, Jesse, who isn’t very trusting of the newcomers but soon warms up to Donovan as a father figure.. Jessie admires Mike and Kyle as ‘ lizard killers..’ Mike decides to stay and help deal with the collaborator sheriff while Kyle continues on his way to Tucson.. At the Desert Dollar saloon, Deputy Karnes reports in to Roland, who demands that more pressure be applied to convince Kathy to co-operate with them. Diana returns to Lydia’s cell to discover that she has eaten the scorpion in an act of defiance, but has saved the best part for Diana.. Lydia flings the stinger at Diana, and Diana then orders Lydia to be prepared for trial.. As Kyle begins unloading Kathy’s promised guns and ammunition, Kathy tries to convince Mike to stay behind to lead a Resistance party.. Mike refuses, until shots are fired at the house.. Mike returns fire from behind some bushes, while Kyle returns from the barn and Jessie fires from the house.. When they hear the unknown attackers leave, Mike decides to stay with the Courtney’s long enough to organize the local resistance, and Kyle heads out to Tucson alone.. At Lydia’s trial, Diana gives Lydia no chance to speak in her own defence and demands a verdict from the panel of three judges.. Lydia objects that she wasn’t given a chance to plead her case, but Diana silences her.. The judges pronounce Lydia guilty, and she is sentenced to death and is to be prepared for execution by the Disintegrator.. A shuttle arrives on the Mothership just as Diana is preparing for Lydia’s execution.. An ensign appears to announce the arrival of Inspector – General Philip, who was briefed on Lydia’s case while in transit.. Diana attempts to continue with Lydia’s execution but Philip arrives to halt it before the Disintegrator is fully armed.. Diana is surprised at the resemblance between Philip and his brother Martin, who Diana says saved her life when she was incarcerated on Earth.. He introduces himself as Philip, special envoy from the Leader.. By order of the Leader, Philip has arrived to conduct an impartial investigation into Charles’s murder.. He releases Lydia from her captivity pending the outcome of his investigation.. The next morning, Mike and Kathy investigate the area of the shooting.. Mike asks Kathy to gather all her neighbours together for a meeting that evening.. A skyfighter above spots the couple; Kathy is knocked from her horse, but Mike manages to lead the fighter on a chase which results in the skyfighter crashing into a mountain.. Kathy sets up a meeting for the ranchers at her house, but only one person attends: Joe, a one – legged rancher.. They decide to proceed with plans for a resistance.. After Philip reviews Lydia’s case, he decides that she deserves a new trial.. He determines that she did not intend to kill Charles, and that in fact her intent was to kill Diana.. As is her right as the accused, her new trial would be ” trial by combat “ between herself and Diana.. Lydia heartily agrees to the combat.. Back in the countryside, in the Sheriff’s office, Deputy Karnes identifies Mike from a Visitor wanted poster.. Sheriff Roland realizes who Mike is and that he’s wanted by the Visitors.. He notifies Lt. James in Los Angeles of the news, who leaves immediately and soon arrives with a handful of troopers.. Meanwhile, at the Resistance Headquarters in L.A., the Resistance members continue to move in equipment and make the place liveable.. When Willie turns from his second – story lookout, he stumbles into a loose railing and falls to the floor below.. Elizabeth, thinking quickly, uses her powers to move some mattresses underneath him, which break his fall.. After making sure that Willie is OK, Julie returns to her monitoring of a Fifth Column transmission, which alerts her that Lt. James is on his way to get Mike.. Julie attempts to locate the two men, and is interrupted by the arrival of Kyle.. Informed of the situation, they decide to head back to Kathy’s ranch to help Mike: Julie is forced to stay at the H.Q. due to a pulled muscle in her neck, but Kyle, Willie, and Elizabeth take the vehicle and head back to the ranch.. On board the Mothership, Philip eventually determines that Diana violated proper legal procedure, so Lydia is entitled to a new trial – a trial by combat with her accuser, Diana.. Lydia exercises her option, and the fight is scheduled for the following day.. Diana and Lydia prepare for combat.. At Kathy’s ranch, Joe and Jessie clean their weapons in preparation for a Visitor attack.. Jessie hints to Mike that she would like him to stay, to take care of Kathy.. Diana and Lydia begin their combat as Philip and a judge oversee.. Both are given a long staff which ends in a curved metal edge.. As they fight, Lydia knocks Diana’s staff from her hands and as they wrestle on the floor, she loses her own staff.. Philip watches their progress until he is interrupted by a Visitor clad in a white lab coat, who shows him something in a valise… Lydia, meanwhile, begins choking Diana, rips some of the ‘ skin ‘ from Diana’s face, and spits venom into her opponent’s eyes.. With Diana momentarily blinded, Lydia grabs a new staff and prepares to impale Diana – until Philip stops the fight calling a halt to the proceedings.. Outside the Sheriff’s office, Joe witnesses Lt. James shuttle land.. Roland offers James a rat as a peace offering, which James accepts.. Joe leaves as Lt. James goes inside Roland’s office.. Joe immediately heads to Kathy’s place to warn Donovan, but discovers that Mike and Kathy have gone to fetch the horses.. Joe tells Jessie what has transpired in town, and Jessie immediately grabs her gun, gets into Joe’s truck, and heads to town.. Kyle, Willie, and Elizabeth arrive at Kathy’s ranch – when Joe pulls a gun on Willie, Elizabeth uses her powers to knock the weapon out of his hand.. Once Mike and Kathy arrive, Joe informs the group of Jessie’s whereabouts, and Mike formulates a plan.. The group races to find Jesse, who has run off with plans to protect Mike by killing James on her own.. While Lt. James and Roland discuss Donovan’s capture, Jessie disables the lasers on the fighter with some well placed shots.. As James confronts Jessie, Kathy and Joe arrive pulling the horses in a covered trailer.. James send Karnes and another deputy to check the trailer; and they are knocked to the ground when Willie and Elizabeth jump from the back of the truck.. Mike arrives on horseback and takes out James before he can shoot.. In the meantime, Kyle jumps from his hiding place atop the Desert Dollar and eliminates two more Visitors.. Jessie heads for cover behind the van while Joe knocks out Roland with his crutch.. While Kyle and Mike deal with the remaining Visitors, Lt. James runs for the fighter and takes off.. Nevertheless, it now seems that Roland’s reign is over, and the torch is passed to Kathy and Jesse to head up the new local Resistance.. The Resistance fighters prepare to leave Kathy’s ranch, confident that the ranchers, who now have a leader in Kathy, will be able to stave off another Visitor attack.. Jessie asks Mike to stay with them, but he informs her that there are other people who need him, and promises to visit again when the war is over.. With their combat halted, Diana and Lydia get repairs to their ‘ skin..’ Philip reveals that tests have discovered that there were another set of prints on the bottle of cat poison used to kill Charles – but the prints are not Lydia’s.. He decrees that, until he can figure out what happened, Lydia and Diana will be under the Inter – Guardian Rule – if anything happens to one of them, the blame will automatically fall on the other.. By the Leader’s orders, the two women resume their ranks held under Charles, meaning Diana must report to Lydia for the time – being.. But, Lydia must report to Philip.. Neither seems terribly happy about the development.. Blooper Details: The police car that stops Donovan and Kyle at the beginning of the episode has California license plates, though they are supposed to be in Nevada at this point.. When Mike and Kyle are preparing to leave Kathy’s ranch, Kathy tells Kyle that Jessie will help him in the barn.. However, when the shooting starts Jessie appears in the doorway of the house.. The skyfighter chasing Mike on horseback is shown flying over a large body of water, of which there was none around the ranch.. The chase on horseback scene is reused footage from the miniseries.. When Diana gives Lydia the scorpion, she tells Lydia that she will return in the morning to see if Lydia is still alive.. The next scene shows Diana returning to Lydia, while it is still dark outside, and discovering that the scorpion is dead.. In the following scene we see Kathy’s ranch, still at night.. Next we see Lydia’s trial, taking place while it is still dark outside the Mothership.. Perhaps Diana decided to push up the trial? When Kathy falls from her horse, she has a blotch of dirt on the left side of her face.. When Mike returns to check on her, the blotch has moved to her right cheek! Joe tells Jessie that the Visitors have arrived for Donovan, ” led by someone named James..” Lt. James name was not mentioned in Joe’s presence.. Diana thought that Philip’s resemblance to Martin was uncanny.. What’s the big deal, since they both wore masks? Philip announced that tests showed that prints on the poison vial were not Lydia’s.. They are all wearing pseudo – skin – none of them should leave fingerprints of any kind, since their fingers don’t have oil glands in amongst the ridges and valleys to leave prints behind! Stock footage reused: When Lt. James escapes in the shuttle, the shot of the craft leaving is just reversed footage of it arriving.. Stock footage reused: The footage of Philip’s shuttle arriving on the mothership is the same footage used when the Supreme Commander John arrived in Part 1 of The Final Battle.. Stock footage reused: The shot which is always used for the hanger deck features Kristine Walsh ( Who was killed in the mini – series! ) in the background.. During Lydia and Diana’s fight, it seems Lydia has sabotaged Diana’s lyrpa; it has a floppy rubber blade! Trivia: This episode is the first to open with a new version of the credits.. The mid – season credits are longer than the original version and feature a voiceover monologue.. As expected, Michael Ironside, Lane Smith, Blair Tefkin, and Michael Wright are no longer included in the credits.. Beginning with ” The Champion,” the Freedom Network update no longer appears at the beginning of each episode.. Philip and Martin are identical twins u.. When Philip arrives, Diana makes small talk and describes how Martin died a heroic death at the hands of the Humans while freeing her to return to the fleet.. She doesn’t mention that Martin was a Fifth Columnist, and it’s not clear if Philip knows that fact.. In this episode Julie is recovering from some sort of injury, which is why she does not accompany the others to help Mike deal with Sheriff Roland and Lt. James.. Quotes: (Lydia once again shows her keen intellect):” The Champion..”

Lydia: I’ve never been defeated in mortal combat..
Diana: Idiot! If you had you’d be dead!
