Is V: The New Series in trouble?

V: The New Series s01e03 saw ratings and audience drop significantly again, down 18 percent to 9.3 million ( 3.1 rating among adults 18 – 49 ).. That after a precipitous 29% drop in week two from the blockbuster premiere..

One of the worst parts of starting a season later than everyone else is that you’re growing pains are much more noticeable when everyone else is already through theirs.. That’s exactly what V: The New Series is facing in its third week after losing another 9% of its audience to finish with a 6.0 rating / 9 share, according to Fast National ratings from The Nielsen Co.. Not only is that a drop from the previous week, but it’s now more than 29% off its series premiere..

SS-2009.11.18-18.05.05

In all, however, V: The New Series remains this season’s best – rated network genre show, averaging a 7.0 / 10, and still doing stronger after three episodes than ABC‘s other genre series, FlashForward.. That Brannon Braga / David S. Goyer vehicle premiered with a 7.7 / 3 compared to V‘s 8.5 / 13, and was down to a 5.9 / 9 by its third episode.. FlashForward is currently averaging a 6.1 / 10 after eight episodes..

For the 3rd consecutive week, V: The New Series ranked No. 1 in the 8 o’clock hour among Men 18 – 34 ( 2.6 / 9 – tie ), while taking second among Men 18 – 49 ( 3.2 / 9 ) and Men 25 – 54 ( 3.9 / 10 ).. In addition, V ranked as the No. 1 program on Tuesday among Men 18 – 34 for the 3rd week running..

Versus the year – ago November Sweep night, V: The New Series has improved the hour for ABC by 29% in Adults 18 – 49 ( 2.4 / 6 )..

And V: The New Series has some tough competition.. It goes head – to – head with CBS powerhouse NCIS, which recorded a 12.3 / 19 this week, finishing above its 12.1 / 19 average for the second week in a row.. It remains the top – rated network program, and by far the top – rated scripted network program as right now only ABC‘s Dancing With the Stars can compete with it..

While at least one news outlet is characterizing the ratings for V: The New Series as something that has the show in deep trouble, in reality, it’s still performing well for ABC.. So why would they be canceling?

There is just one episode left of V: The New Series this year, but there is no question ABC plans to bring the show back in the spring.. Of course, it’s still too early to tell if the show will continue for a second season or not, but sources have confirmed to The V Files that they have not heard any talk about a demise for V: The New Series..

ABC has already brought in a new showrunner in Scott Rosenbaum, indicative that they weren’t all that pleased with the direction the series was going.. Perhaps, if the viewership can level out here, or even if it drops again, ABC will still give Rosenbaum a chance to show what he can do.. If V: The New Series can maintain an average of 9 million, the show may be safe..
