When ABC‘s V returns for its second season, the days of sitting around waiting for the Visitors to get the upper hand are over.. Erica Evans ( Elizabeth Mitchell ) and the ragtag group of resistance fighters called the Fifth Column are on the offensive..

Season One followed FBI agent Evans, often the moral compass of the Fifth Column.. The group, however, was small, and their journey was slow and arduous.. Because of the ethical lines Erica refused to cross, she often kept the group from waging the war that should’ve begun in Season One..

When Season Two kicks off ( Tuesday, 9/8c ), the series will dive right into the action with the introduction of a global Fifth Column, who take radical measures to ensure humanity’s safety.. On top of that, we’ll finally learn more about the Visitors, including why they’re really here and what they were doing before they went public.. Hint: Erica Evans now has a real reason to be angry..

” We needed there to be a reason why she would be so ruthless, which she does become,” Mitchell says.. ” I think she’s going to have to cross the line a lot.. She’s passed the point of redemption and that makes for a really dark season..”

V will also strive to nod to the 1983 Mini – Series in hopes of bringing back the fans who loved the Original.. While Season One lacked homage to the Mini – Series – we barely saw what a V looked like and there was no gerbil – eating – Executive Producer Scott Rosenbaum insists it was about finding the right moments to infuse, and ” not feeling like I’m just doing it for the sake of doing it..”

” We’re definitely going to get more,” Rosenbaum says.. The producer notes, in particular, the additions of Original castmembers Jane Badler and Marc Singer.. The long – awaited reveal of what the Visitors look like will be a major nod to Singer’s Original fight on the Mothership when he ripped off the human skin of a Visitor, Rosenbaum says.. And definitely keep your eyes out for rodents..

Upping the pace in Season Two sits well with Mitchell.. ” We have all of these fantastic iconic moments, why not use them??” she says.. ” I think we needed to up the stakes, if only for our own joy and amusement.. It’s V – it’s an alien invasion story, it’s not War and Peace.. It was much more fun to play, for sure..”

The changes for the series are crucial because V has been on the brink of cancelation for some time.. The series debuted to 14.3 million viewers, but fell sharply in subsequent weeks.. The drop was due, in part, to a long absence from the airwaves.. After four episodes in November, the series went on hiatus until March and never gained back its Viewership, hitting rock bottom at 4.87 million viewers in Episode 1.09..

That meant going all out for Season Two, Rosenbaum says.. ” When you’re in danger of being canceled, you have to put your best foot forward..”

As such, expect more cliffhangers.. ” If at the end of each episode, the audience says, ‘ How the hell are they going to get out of that??’ then you know you’re doing something right,” Rosenbaum says..

What if you were called in to run a show that had just aired its first four episodes, and was put on hold?? That happened to former Chuck Writer /Executive Producer Scott Rosenbaum, and he accepted the challenge!!

Scott Rosenbaum, who took over as Executive Producer of ABC‘s alien invasion series V partway through the first season, recently spoke to Gray Jones on the TV Writer Podcast about his experience in coming to the show part – way through the first season and his approach to the storytelling through the end of Season One and into Season Two..

It wasn’t easy, but Scott steered the show V into new waters, and it has gotten stronger and stronger ever since..

You’ll be fascinated to hear how Scott lost his writing staff due to production delays, and had to deliver the last two episodes and the pitch for Season Two by himself, with just the studio as a sounding board!!

Hear also how he selected the Season Two writing staff, his advice for writing spec scripts, how to properly prepare for a staffing interview, and how a chance meeting ended up securing an actor for one of the most important new characters in Season Two..

” I always believed … at the core of what the show was, on a very personal level, it was a war, a battle between two mothers,” Rosenbaum says.. ” It was Anna on one end, and it was Erica on the other end.. Anna’s sort of the mother of all Visitors and Erica is the mother of all humans, and was sort of this battle between them, to sort of save their children..”

It seems, initially, the network wasn’t on board with the two mothers meeting so early into the show’s run, but Rosenbaum felt it was ” essential “ to the story, and ultimately convinced the network it was the right move..

” For those who have watched the show,” Rosenbaum continues, ” I think that most people probably get, you know, once those two started getting closer to meeting each other, and actually met each other, the storytelling just became much richer and more dynamic..”

One of the most anticipated moments of the upcoming season is the appearance of Original Series star Jane Badler in the recurring role of Anna’s mother, Diana.. Rosenbaum says as he contemplated the evolving ” mother ” theme of the show, he was very taken with the idea of what Anna’s mother would be like, and wanted to use that as an obstacle for Anna in the upcoming season.. As for Badler’s casting, Rosenbaum says the plans for Anna’s mother were not made public when he first met with Badler and it was by sheer coincidence that she happened to contact him around the time he was working on the character..

” Randomly, I was at the office and I got a phone call,” he recalls ” that Jane Badler was in L.A. for something and she just wanted to stop by and just say ‘ Hi,’ so I said sure have her come by..”

When she arrived, the two chatted and as Badler talked about her experiences on the Original Series and her family and life back home in Australia, Rosenbaum relates, ” I started to like zone out a little bit, cause I was just listening to her talk and started thinking to myself ‘ Hmmm, you know, what if, you know, maybe she could be Diana..’”

Impressed by what he’d seen and heard, Rosenbaum called to have her read for the part, after she’d already returned home to Australia.. She sent a tape of her reading and of all the actresses who auditioned and sent in tapes, he felt she best embodied his vision of the character..

” There was sort of a fortuitous thing that she happened to be in town that day,” he says.. ” I probably would have reached out to her … but it wasn’t in my mind to cast her at all, because I initially was not into sort of stunt casting..” In the end, it was essentially Badler’s personality and charisma, in addition to her talent, that won him over..

In the interview, Rosenbaum goes on to answer other questions, and addresses plans for the inclusion of other actors from the Original Series, as well as gave some hints of where the season will end.. He also provides insights into the planning and some of the more technical aspects of preparing for season two, in addition to details that went into preparing the season two pitch – which he had to prepare and deliver solo..

For these, and other interesting tidbits, the TV Writer Podcast interview with Rosenbaum in its entirety can be seen above.. The second season premiere of V will air at 9/8c on ABC Tuesday 4th January..

Jane Badler isn’t the only former V cast member set to play a key role on this ABC reboot..

When V returns on January 4 and reaches the Season Finale, viewers will meet Lars Tremont, a character played by Marc Singer, who took on the role of freedom fighter Mike Donovan in the 1980s version of this series..

” He’s the leader of this massive [ Government - funded ] military group called The Aries Project,” which is preparing for a Visitor attack, producer Scott Rosenbaum told TV Guide.. ” They’re not a rag – tag [ Organization ]; they’re the real deal..”

IGN has learned an exciting bit of casting news for ABC‘s alien invasion series, V.. Known from the blockbuster Mummy and Resident Evil film franchises, actor Oded Fehr is joining up as part of the Season 2 rebellion..

Fehr will play Eli Cohn, a leader in a new radical Fifth Column Resistance movement whose hard – line stance against the Visitors poses a special new challenge for our core group of rebels, played by Elizabeth Mitchell ( Erica ), Joel Gretsch ( Jack ), Morris Chestnut ( Ryan ) and Charles Mesure ( Hobbes )..

IGN had a chance to speak to Scott Rosenbaum, executive producer and showrunner of V, about this new character.. ” He is ex – Mossad, and one of the interesting things that we’re doing with the show this year is that we’re introducing a group of Fifth Column which is much more radical than our group,” Rosenbaum told us.. ” And essentially they have a much different philosophy than our main team does.. Eli’s philosophy is, ‘ We need to attack now, strike now and start this war now,’ rather than wait..”

Rosenbaum explained that our heroes, because they’re so outnumbered, are more of the mind of waiting for the perfect opportunity to strike and then deliver a knockout punch.. ” Oded’s character Eli actually knows a lot more about what the Visitors are up to than our team does,” he said.. ” And what he’s learned is that the longer we wait to fight the more we play into Anna and the Visitors’ hands, because everything she’s doing is a Trojan Horse.. The Blue Energy is a gift, but really it’s just to get us all stuck on Blue Energy so they can turn it off..” Rosenbaum said Erica will have to decide whether her team can get along and join up with Eli to become one united front, or if she’ll have to take him down for being too extreme in his methods..

Apparently, Erica and Eli also share a mysterious, connecting, secret.. ” Erica does not want collateral damage, but over the course of the arc maybe she’ll come to learn that he’s not much different than she is,” Rosenbaum revealed.. ” She’s also going to find, and I can’t tell you what it is, a very shocking reveal.. The two of them have something in common that she never would have guessed..”

It’s no secret that there were numerous problems behind the scenes on ABC’s ” V..” For a start, the series lost its showrunner, Scott Peters, only four episodes in and the overall arc of the story had to be realigned..

However, what may not be apparent is just how directionless the series was after the upheaval and how much work was needed to re – create V into a working television series without stepping on the toes of the original four – episode story..

” It was tough in the beginning,” producer Scott Rosenbaum told The Futon Critic.. ” I had to create the mythology but then also back – track it so that it made sense with what the first four episodes “ had set up..

In the first batch of episodes, V focused more on the arrival of the Visitors and their impact on society, as well as placing them in locations where they could influence the human race.. Once the series returned from its extended break for the final run of episodes, the show focused more on the re – emergence of the Fifth Column and hints toward a coming war for the Earth..

However, one thing in short supply was answers on what the Visitors are really up to and why they are so interested in tagging the human race..

” In a complicated show that needs a mythology, you have to have … answers,” Rosenbaum said.. ” I think the reason the show had some problems in the beginning was because there weren’t answers to the questions “ being posed..

How will that change in Season Two? Well, Rosenbaum insists he now knows who these aliens are and where they come from … something that will change – and maybe even expand upon – some of the original series..

” Going into Season Two, I spent a lot of time completely solving the mythology [ And working out ] where [ The aliens ] came from, where they’d been before Earth [ And ] why they’re at Earth,” he said..” They’re a little different than a typical alien.. You’re going to understand what they are, how they were created and what they consist of.. They’re not necessarily just lizards..”

Fans of V: The New Series will be over the moon, as it has been made official.. ABC announced today that actress Jane Badler, best known for her role on the V: The Original  Mini – Series, and V: The Final Battle, as well as V: The Series, has been signed and will join the cast of ABC’s new version of V as a recurring guest star, playing ” Diana,” mother to Anna ( Morena Baccarin ), who is now the leader of the Vs..

Two weeks ago, at the annual San Diego Comic – Con, Executive Producer,  Scott Rosenbaum, accidentally let slip that after a question was asked about whether we’d go to the Visitors’ home planet, and Rosenbaum said we’d certainly learn more about them – which is when he began a sentence with, ” When we meet Diana … “ He continued saying: ” We’re going to cast the best actor and she is certainly someone we’re thinking about,” said Rosenbaum.. ” I don’t know if she’ll be Anna’s mother, but I’d like to have her be in the show this season..”

Well, Jane Badler was the best actor.. For me, this was confirmed when Rosenbaum let it slip about the characters name; Badler’s Tweeter message to Executive Producer, Jace Hall,  shortly after Comic – Con ” @JaceHall what is your email my agent received a very strange email from casting agent love to ask you about it x Jane “ ( Which was deleted shortly after I asked Badler about it ); and then Badler’s Facebook announcement a week ago: “  Been a it quiet very exciting week hope to have some news for you all in the next week x Jane Badler..”

In announcing her inclusion in the cast, ABC said she will play an important role in the series this season, which will feature more character reveals and more details about the Vs mythology..

But you’re asking, how will she be introducing into the series? It’s been revealed that Anna is keeping Diana prisoner aboard the Visitor Mothership, in a section of the ship which has been designed to look like the Visitor’ home planet..

The V Files can give you a bit more information by letting you know that Anna has been keeping Diana prisoner for the past 15 years.. Did Anna over throw her mother for the thrown?? Only time will tell..

Another question you’re probably wondering is, when will Diana ( Jane Badler ) make her grand entrance?? Fans will not have to wait long!! The character ” Diana “ will be making her presence felt in the Season Two Premier airing in November.. No official word has been released about the date of  Season Two’s Premier, but I’d say it will be most likely Tuesday 9th November 2010..

This move is similar to Richard Hatch’s stint on the ” Battlestar Galactica “ remake after starring as Apollo in the original series..

Badler will be the first original V cast member to appear on the new series.. Marc Singer ( V: The Original’s Mike Donovan ) and Robert Englund ( V: The Original’s Willie ) have both shown interest in making an appearance, hopefully your time is coming soon! Fans would also like to see Michael Ironside ( V: The Original’s Ham Tyler ) join Hobbs ( Charles Measure ) as his father or ex SAS Commander.. Will they get their chance?? Only time will tell..

Badler has been Guest Starring on the Aussie Soapy ” Neighbours “ for past few months.. She recently finished up her role on the drama series and will be heading over to Vancouver to join the rest of the cast, who begin filming in just under a week, on the 12th August 2010.. On that note, The V Files has been informed that a script for Episode 2.01 has been sent out to Cast and Crew..

But not all V fans are happy with this move.. Frowning on Producers and even Badler herself.. There are many that are calling her ” greedy “ and a ” snake,” for turning her back on Kenny Johnson and the Original Mini – Series.. I, for one, do wish that they would change Badler’s character name from ” Diana..” To try and avoid any confusion for fans..
