It turns out that evil reptilian aliens who invade Earth are so unpredictable that they can surprise even the actors who play them.. At least, Morena Baccarin says, this is the case with Anna, the ruthless Visitor leader she portrays on V, which has its second season finale tonight on at 9..
This season, Brazilian – born Baccarin ( A heroine to fans of Firefly and Serenity for portraying Inara Serra as well as a veteran of Stargate SG – 1 as the dangerous Adria ) killed a fellow Visitor with her tail and ingested a rodent, not to mention dealing with her mother Diana, played by original ‘80s V villainess Jane Badler – none of which she was expecting..
Assignment X: Prior to the Season Two premiere, did you know that Anna had a lethal tail??
Morena Baccarin: I didn’t [ Laughs ].. I remember that conversation very well.. ” You’re going to get a tail this season..” ” What??” It was really fun.. It was one of the hardest scenes actually to act, because I’ve never had a tail in my life, so I wasn’t sure how to move my body to make it not look stupid, but I thought they did a phenomenal job with special effects..
AX: Is the tail the most difficult thing you’ve had to deal with so far??
MB: [ Laughs ] Oh, no.. It just gets worse.. There was a little rat – eating, there’s stuff that I couldn’t believe I had to do..
AX: Do you like rodents normally??
MB: No [ Laughs ].. Who does?? I showed up to work and they were like, ” You’re going to have to hold this mouse, is that okay??” I said, ” Sure, whatever..” They bring out this huge white rat and it was like this big [ Hands apart to indicate Ratzilla ].. I had to dangle it over my face and I was petrified..
AX: Was the rat upset, too??
MB: Yes, actually, the rat was kind of squeaking and wanted to crawl back on my hand and pee on my hand and it was kind of gross..
AX: Now, is everything in the Visitor world still CGI or have they given you a little more physical stuff to work with this year??
MB: I had a couple of physical things, which is really fun.. I got to go down to Earth a few times.. That was really nice, but I am on the mothership quite a bit..
AX: This season on V, the plot has been somewhat like The Lion in Winter, or at least The Lizard in Winter, with Anna’s mother Diana and her daughter Lisa conspiring against her..
MB: Yes, it’s very Shakespearean, the three V generations of women fighting for the throne..
AX: Are you drawing on your stage background at all to play what’s going on there??
MB: I think for this role in general, yes.. I think it’s very Shakespearean and I think it’s really larger than life..
AX: There’s a running plot thread with how DNA and human skin possibly cause Visitors to have human – like emotions.. Do you have to play different levels of, Anna’s really being affected by this, but she’s pretending she’s not affected??
MB: Yes. It’s interesting, the journey that Anna goes on.. She gets affected more by the human skin, and this hybrid baby poses a really interesting dilemma for her.. She starts to feel like its mother and starts to feel attached to it, but she can’t let that show, so there’s the constant bringing [ The emotion ] back..
AX: How do you feel Anna is evolving as a character?? Is Anna evolving in her own eyes, or would that be something she’d be upset about??
MB: I think it’s something she would be upset about, but in true Anna style, she’s going to find a positive in it and find a way to make it work for her..
AX: In the original V series, there was a hybrid baby who went through a major growth spurt which is happening on this series too.. So might this baby team up with Lisa, or will she be teaming up with Anna??
MB: Yes, somewhat.. She plays a pivotal role in the last episode in helping me with my plans..
AX: Are you optimistic that there will be a Season Three of V??
MB: I am.. I think you never know with television.. I feel very proud of this season.. I feel like we’re finally giving the audience what they want.. I think it’s really exciting.. I just feel really grateful and happy to be able to play this role.. I think it’s so much fun..

This Tuesday at 9/8c, ABC’s V inches ( Slithers?) one step closer to its Season Two Finale, as Anna prepares to flip the switch on the Blue Energy reactor that will, unbekno.wnst to many, seal Earth’s fate.. All the while, imprisoned queen Diana is conspiring with granddaughter Lisa take control of matters and do things her own way..
TVLine spoke with Morena Baccarin about the Visitors’ agenda, the very cool reptilian reveal to come, and the rather deadly season – ender..
TVLine: I’m a fan of the show, but have been having trouble grasping some of the recent science.. The Vs are stealing DNA excerpts from humans to, what, help their own evolution??
Morena Baccarin: Exactly.. It’s very confusing.. [ Laughs ] But yes, we are extracting the best DNA from humans and putting it in a big DNA machine, and we’re going to use that for our future generations to have a stronger evolutionary process..
TVL: And why is the Vs’ evolution threatened??
MB: We had to flee our planet, so basically we’ve been searching for a new home. Earth is the strongest [candidate] of the planets that we found — it’s the one where we’re most viable and able to have our species continue.
TVL: But if y’all adapt, you’re going to want to come down out of your spaceships and live with us.. It could get … crowded..
MB: Uh – huh.. Uh – huh.. You’re onto something!!
TVL: In this week’s episode, Anna readies to fire up the Blue Energy reactor, but apparently the device is not what it seems.. What can you tease about its actual purpose??
MB: Well, the shape of Concordia [ Designed as a docking platform for Visitor ships ] is a big clue.. There are like 529 Concordia cities being built, and there are [ Hundreds of ] ships looming over Earth, but it’s beyond human technology to see them.. We are not coming; we are here..
TVL: Does Anna’s mother, Diana, truly have the humans’ best interests at heart?? Or is she simply angling to be the one to rule them all??
MB: She was a queen, so for sure she wants to be queen again and rule them all.. She also has this ” emotion “ thing that she thinks is a good tool to have.. She would definitely overthrow me, so she’s not getting out of the dungeon as far as I’m concerned..
TVL: Do you think defiant Lisa has reached the point of no return, or might there be a way for Anna to get her back into the fold??
MB: Never underestimate what Anna can do, but Lisa seems to be pretty far in the Fifth Column direction..
TVL: Speaking of which: How fun was the big ol’ slap fight you and Laura Vandervoort got to have a few weeks back??
MB: Pretty great!! It was pretty, pretty great.. We kept cracking up, actually..
TVL: The show has pulled back on the Anna / Chad flirtation thing.. Is that because attraction is a sort of emotion?? Could Anna be attracted to Chad??
MB: She could be, because attraction is also very animal.. But it’s too soon to have that happen.. You need to tease that..
TVL: As an actress playing an emotion – free character, how and where do you find your ” moments “??
MB: It’s very challenging.. I have to be really specific and know what I’m saying and why I’m saying it and know the emotion behind it, so I can choose not to show it.. I know that sounds kind of crazy, but when I have that behind my words you can kind of see it.. You know when she’s pissed; I just can’t show it on the surface..
TVL: So the other week, when Anna warmly greeted that Live Aboarder’s daughter, that was all pretend??
MB: Yes, because she knows that she needs that girl.. She’s a master manipulator, so she’ll do what it takes – even finding out the woman’s name and naming her own daughter that.. But within that, she’s starting to get closer to [ Ryan's ] little girl, Amy – and I think that is genuine..
TVL: V showrunner Scott Rosenbaum tweeted that we are about to get a look at a Visitor in their full, naked, native state.. Have you seen the final FX yet??
MB: I haven’t, but I’m dying to.. I’ve seen photos, but I haven’t seen the [ Full - motion version ]..
TVL: I imagine it looks like an erect lizard.. Or a Sleestak..
MB: They want to make it a conglomeration of all these different species.. There’s something prehistoric about it but there’s also something predatory about it, so it’ll be cool..
TVL: The story is we’re getting three deaths in the March 15 season finale..
MB: Are there three?? [ Thinks for a moment ] Oh my god, yes!! It’s crazy.. Totally nuts.. And it’s really heartbreaking.. I cried when I saw it..
TVL: If the show gets picked up for a third season, will it be strange returning to the set minus those three actors??
MB: For sure..
TVL: What are your plans for the hiatus??
MB: I’m going to Australia for a convention, so that’s go to be exciting.. I’ve never been there.. Other than that, I’m in a waiting period, so I can’t really take on much more than an episode of things here and there [ Such as an upcoming episode of The Mentalist ].. I am just hoping that we’ll be shooting V at the end of the summer!!

This new season, original 1980’s evil ” V “ commander Diana played by the still stunning Jane Badler, returns as Anna’s mom.. We had to know about their relationship, the addition of original ” V “ star Marc Singer to the cast, Morena’s continuing encounters with fans of Firefly and we asked if she is trying to put a little ” humanity ” into Anna.. Picture the actress in a gorgeous black cocktail dress..
TeenTelevision: How has it been to work with Jane Badler as Anna’s mom??
Morena Baccarin: She’s really awesome.. We went out a few times in Vancouver together.. She’s really sweet.. We had dinner and hung out.. I met her husband, who’s really awesome.. It’s been fun to have her around..
TT: How much more intense will their relationship get this season??
MB: It gets pretty intense.. Even lizards get annoyed by their moms.. She does a really good job of pushing my buttons.. We have an intense relationship and it gets pretty fueled up.. At the end, in the season finale, they really go head – to – head..
TT: When did you know that she would be playing your mother??
MB: I had been told that they were looking for somebody, right before we started shooting last year.. And then, we found out that she was one of the top contenders..
TT: Had you seen her in the role of Diana on the original TV show??
MB: Of course.. Who can forget?? She gave me goosebumps growing up.. I think I spent many sleepless nights because of her..
TT: Your character Anna has a bit more of an emotional side this season.. How do you find that balance??
MB: I’m trying.. I think it’s important to humanize her because that is the interesting struggle for this character; to have her not be human, but struggling with human things.. Just like any creature coming into a new environment, you have all these outside forces that influence you..
TT: Who would you love to see as a guest star on the show??
MB: A lot of us on the show are obsessed with ” Modern Family “ and we think there should be a switch.. The whole family can come aboard the mothership, and then maybe we can come over for dinner or something..
TT: That would be hilarious.. Is there anything you can hint at, as far as what’s coming up on the show??
MB: Marc Singer [ Original 1980’s " V " star ] is going to be on the show in the season finale, so that’s really fun.. It’s a great reveal..
TT: Are his pants going to be as tight as they were in the ‘80’s?? That was legendary at the time..
MB: [ Laughs ] I hope so!! He’s playing one of the leaders of a different branch of the Fifth Column [ Resistance ].. I won’t reveal exactly what it is, but it’s a much bigger Fifth Column than exists right now..
TT: Will you have any scenes with him??
MB: I don’t have any scenes with him, no.. Not yet..
TT: Is it something that will continue to Season Three, if there is one??
MB: Yes, definitely.. He would be on the show.. He’s essentially joining the show, if we get another season..
TT: How will the relationship between Anna and her daughter Lisa continue to develop??
MB: We have an interesting dynamic.. She’s actually becoming a little more human and going more towards Erica’s ( Elizabeth Mitchell ) section [ Of the Resistance ] than mine.. I’m still breeding her to be Queen and wanting her to have that hardness that I have, but I start to see that she maybe doesn’t have that in her..
This hybrid baby plays a big role, as something that gets between our relationship, because I start to develop feelings for this little baby..
TT: What was your reaction the first time you saw the effects that they did with your character, especially when her mouth really grows and she has scary teeth??
MB: It is totally bizarre.. I’m so glad that I rely on amazing people to make me look like that ‘cause it could go terribly wrong.. But, it’s weird.. It’s awkward shooting it.. You have to pretend that you’re doing it, and then you’re not really doing it.. But then I saw it and I think they did such a phenomenal job with that.. It’s so weird..
TT: Are you able to give a lot of input into your character??
MB: Not as much as I would like to.. I have some ideas and I would like to get them pushed through, but there’s a network and studios and a lot of people to okay anything.. I definitely get stuff out there and talk with the writers and producers.. Scott Rosenbaum is really sweet and will listen to whatever I say.. It’s been fun to create this character..
TT: Do people still ask you about ” Firefly” and your work on that show??
MB: They do, all the time.. People come up to me and say, ” I love V, but by the way, I’m a big ” Firefly ” fan..” It’s always what they say..
TT: Do you ever talk to Joss Whedon about working together again, either on another ” Firefly ” movie or something else??
MB: I would say that project is probably dead, but I keep in touch with him.. I’m just looking for an opportunity to work with him again.. He’s so great..

In ABC’s reboot of V, the alien Visitors trying to take over Earth are led by Anna ( Played by Morena Baccarin ), who is a pretty cold customer even by extraterrestrial reptile standards.. She mates with humans and then eats them, skins alive subordinates who displease her and even beats up her own daughter Lisa for disobedience..
This season, we’ll see that Anna also has been dishing out rough treatment to her mother ( Portrayed by Jane Badler, who was the primary alien villainess in the original ’80s incarnation of V )..
Thanks to the fact that Anna is played by Baccarin ( Pronounced BACK – a – rin ), she looks fabulous while behaving heinously.. We caught up briefly with Baccarin to talk about where V has been and where it’s going when Season Two debuts January 4 on ABC..
Assignment X: Last season, it was perceived that either V or Flashfoward would be renewed for a second season by ABC, but not both.. Was that a situation that had you sort of biting your nails??
Morena Baccarin: I have to say we were pretty confident.. It didn’t have to be one or the other, but we were confident the show was doing well..
AX: What do you feel the series’ strengths became as the first season went along – do you think it got stronger in any areas?
MB: I feel like we really hit our stride somewhere halfway through and the final three episodes I think were really what the show is about, and we all feel really happy with it..
AX: Going into the new season, are we seeing more all – out war, or is it continuing to be the espionage seduction / threat dynamic of first season??
MB: I’m not sure.. I know that we’re going to continue to have somewhat of a war, but I don’t think it’s going to go full on, because otherwise the show’s over.. But you’re going to see what the red sky is and where several characters of the show are going..
AX:We’ve seen that Anna sprouts fangs when she mates.. How did you enjoy working with those??
MB: That was really fun.. That’s a fun thing to do at work [ Laughs ].. Well, I didn’t have to have any makeup on for that.. It was all CGI, it was a special effect..
AX: The VFX people just said, ” Open your mouth wide and we’ll do the rest “??
MB: Exactly.. It was easy as far as I was concerned.. I didn’t have to do the hard work..
AX: Do you feel any kind of ownership of the Mothership set there – when you walk onto it, do you have a feeling of, “This is mine “??
MB: [ Laughs ] I don’t have a set, so no.. It’s all green screen, so it’s just a big green room.. I love working there – it feels like home..
AX: How do you feel about the mother / daughter relationships in Anna’s life?? I mean, is that normal for Vs, or is she notably cold even if you’re an extraterrestrial reptile??
MB: I think that’s the V way of life.. It’ll be really interesting to see the dynamics between Lisa and Elizabeth Mitchell’s character, and Anna and Lisa, and Anna and her mother, to be able to see how the [ Different ] mothers operate..
AX: Anything else you’d like to say about V or your career overall??
MB: Just that I’m very happy to be where I am..
