Michael Langston Moore: What can viewers expect from the second half of V this year?
Jace Hall: Simply put, I think viewers can expect some great entertainment along with some compelling food for thought.. A wider platform for social commentary, a thoughtful examination at the universal nature of survival of family and species, a series of oh – my – god – holy – wow – didn’t – see – that – coming moments.. More visceral drama with awe and wonder and excitement..

People should expect to be presented with great main characters that won’t always make the right choices.. As we all know, in life, happy endings are far from guaranteed for everyone.. That being said, the show is definitely not going to be a dark, fugitive, purely resistance story.. Certainly there will be some dark elements, and the stakes are always incredibly high, but the show also aims to be rewarding with great fun and depth of discovery..

MLM: How important is it to stay faithful to the original mini – series in hopes of hooking older viewers, but also be fresh and original enough to rope in a 2010 audience?
JH: Obviously the original mini – series has a special place in many people’s hearts.. It’s been a part of many people’s childhoods ( My own included ) and it is important to recognize that audience’s desire to see certain elements of the core concept remain intact in some form.. However, the truth is that great storytelling, compelling characters and a fascinating premise are the fundamental key ingredients to generating interest in virtually any drama audience demographic – that stuff is the ultimate audience desire – so really it is not so much about balancing ” old series and new series “ as it is just about focusing on telling the best story possible.. Our desire is not to tell a story that has already been told, but instead try to bring something new and fresh to the table so that there is something there to be explored and discovered..

MLM: What are the challenges that you encounter in producing a show that not only is based off a previous program, but is a sci-fi story that incorporates CGI and green screen effects?
JH: Well, the challenges always revolve around the triangle of ” Time, Money, and Quality..” You can always have 2 of the 3, but never all three! The concept of V allows for some incredible opportunities in terms of visual effects, however there is only so much time available to realize these opportunities, so it gets to be very important to pick and choose things that are going to greatly enhance the story we are trying to tell and avoid having visual effects just for the sake of having visual effects.. Obviously, when you watch the show, V leads on the technology front with things like virtual sets and such, but it is always important to remember that we are focused on making a story about people, characters, families.. The visual effects are there to support this primary goal..

MLM: What are your thoughts on some in the media claiming V is an allegory on President Barack Obama and, essentially, the ” Obamania ” that swept the nation two years ago?
JH: Great Science Fiction writing can seem to carry many allegories for many subjects depending on a person’s point of view.. I think that anytime Science Fiction can inadvertently spark a meaningful discussion about what is happening ( Or not happening ) in real life it is always a good thing.. Everyone has their various opinions and this show seems to act as conduit to help opinions get expressed from all sides.. That’s good television..

MLM: You created your own web series called ” The Jace Hall Show..” What is it that about and how did it begin?
JH: The Jace Hall Show began with the simple realization that 99% of all video game culture depictions in the mass media are grossly artificial and play toward the worst stereotypes possible.. I realized that much like Hip – Hop, Internet / Gamer culture and lifestyle has permeated many levels of our general society and has become far more relevant that is currently being acknowledged.. The bottom line is either you play video games or you know someone who does.. It’s that simple..

This realization led me to understand that aside from things like sports, movies, music etc.. there was something else acting as a common bond in our society and there was basically no programming addressing it – THUS, the Jace Hall Show was born..

I would describe the show as ” Curb Your Enthusiasm “ meets ” Attack of the Show..” The show generally follows the Gamer – meets – Hollywood cross – culture antics of host me ( Jason Hall ) – an avid gamer, accomplished TV and videogame producer and founder of HDFILMS.. It is a weekly, short form online program that fuses celebrities, videogames, internet culture and humor, featuring exclusive behind – the – scenes footage and interviews with the hottest game developers, actors, musicians, athletes and more..

The show’s format essentially re – invents the very concept of the ‘ television talkshow..’ and I aim it straight at the gamer and internet youth audiences.. It’s been very successful on the internet garnering millions of viewers and there has been some discussion here about possibly taking to television – but I’m not sure if TV is ready for it yet!

MLM: You have a deep love for video games, which is evident from your web series and personal website.. How did you come up with the idea for creating music videos for video games? And when did you begin to add celebrities such as Seth MacFarlane and Randy Jackson to your online productions?
JH: Well, to be honest I didn’t come up with the idea for creating music videos for video game culture, I just try to crank it up a notch and perhaps provide a more commercial look and sound to my productions.. The goal is to make it as approachable as possible and encourage discovery..

As far as celebrities go, they have always been a part of the production of The Jace Hall Show.. There are many reasons for this.. For one, a lot of them are my friends and it is just cool hang out and chill.. Secondly, they either play video games or at least participate in the lifestyle or culture in some way and having them on my show further proves the point that this ” gamer / internet “ thing is nearly ubiquitous.. Thirdly, my show offers celebs a rare opportunity to just be themselves without having to promote something or act a certain way.. It’s a way for people to get to know them as ” people “ and not ” things..” It’s all good, clean fun..

MLM: You are both a television producer and video game producer.. How is producing a television show for ABC different from producing a game for the XBOX or Playstation? What challenges do you routinely run into?
JH: Oh wow, these things are quite different actually.. To explain all the differences is a book in itself! Fundamentally, the differences are driven by the different business model demands.. In television, you have an advertising based medium and that has very specific needs.. With video games, you are talking about a packaged product that sits on a shelf and sells for $60 – that’s a whole different world right there.. Also, each medium’s ability to move a viewer emotionally are quite different in capacity.. Really the only thing they have in common is that they both can tell compelling stories..

MLM: What can you tell me about your EP titled ” Video Games Aren’t Bad For You?”
JH: It’s a Hip – Hop style taken to the next level.. I call it G – Hop.. Very catchy, mainstream sounding beats fused with an expression of sensibilities surrounding the internet and gamer culture.. As you know, rappers from the street grow up in the hood, witnessing violence, drugs and crime, so they talk about that in their rhymes – and that is legit.. By that same token, people like me grew up playing video games with friends, phreaking, hacking, using the net, watching technology make the world change, and so I decided to finally make some music that speaks to that experience – my experience – and THAT is legit.. I’ve made games, lived the lifestyle, and have been part of the rise of this new culture.. I wanted to talk about it a little, because there are a lot of us out there.. I compose all the beats and music and lay the vocals down myself..

TV Guide recently sat down with V: The New Series Executive Producer, Jace Hall.. During the interview Jace answered questions relating to his show, The Jace Hall Show, celebrities and the re – imaging of V.. Here’s what he said about V..

TVGuide.com: What would you say is the focus of V in the second half of the season?
Jace Hall: Because we’re dealing with a franchise that existed before in the ’80s, there are certain things that people expect and hope that this franchise will either nod to or communicate in some way.. What comes with that expectation is that we need to do some of that.. We’re able to actually go further with the story, beyond what people have seen or what they can predict.. When this reimaging took place, we actually had a plan and a sense of direction of where this whole thing is supposed to go, so it doesn’t have to be thought up at the last minute.. People will start to really get the benefit of all the forethought that went in..

TVG.com: The fourth episode left us with several huge cliff – hangers, including the impending arrival of an armada of Visitors.. What answers will we get when the show returns?
JH: The audience should always ask themselves when they’re watching this.. ” How would we plausibly react to these things that are coming and happening?” We’re trying to keep this show grounded and character – centric as much as possible, really think about if this was happening, what would logically start to occur and how would people naturally react.. That’s been the challenge and fun for the writing team.. Yes, you’re going to get answers, but those answers are going to create even more questions..

TVG.com: Jane Badler, who played Visitor Diana in the original miniseries, is guest-starring on The Jace Hall Show this year. Does this open the possibility for her to appear on ABC’s V?
JH: I personally would enjoy seeing her in some fashion in the show.. Jane is a great friend and she is wonderful.. That would be a trip.. That will ultimately be up to the writers’ room.. I’m just one person in a team of 100 people.. Yes, I know Jane.. Yes, Jane has come to my office.. That’s as far as I can tell you..

Check out the rest of the interview here..

Q: Is there a different context to the issues of media, technology and religion in this version?
Scott Peters: To me, the main theme that kind of runs through all the stories is about blind devotion, whether it’s blind devotion to your religion or to your partner in life or to your work or to anything really.. So the idea that Father Jack’s big question at the beginning is how can I reconcile the reality of spaceships outside my window with what I know of the bible? So his faith is shaken a little bit.. It’s those sorts of themes that I think run across the board..

Q: How about the idea that the talent tells the journalist what he can’t ask, or having medical technology that cures 63 of our diseases?
SP: It is.. We try to bring new elements to the show that will certainly play for an audience in 2009 / 2010.. You heard universal healthcare get a laugh because it’s so topical in the news right now.. I mean, it’s been in the news for a long time but it’s particularly topical right now.. All of that stuff, the media, obviously the TMZs of the world, there’s such hugely driven celebrity that goes on in our society and I love that Anna tries to basically rig the election before anything can happen..

Jace Hall: Let me add to that which is all great science fiction, at least in my view, has a real opportunity to make a comment or look at the human condition in various ways.. Taking the media as an angle is a really good way to look at our obsession with the cost of what are we willing to do? We’re living in a Facebook / Myspace age so you’re getting characters that Scott and team are writing that are exploiting some of those things, along with medical issues in how we can talk about those elements of the human condition..

Q: Was it intentional to cast popular genre actors?
SP: Honestly, the first thing we look for is the right actor for the right role.. In fact, Father Jack for instance was originally scripted as a much younger, late 20s / early 30’s kind of guy.. As we started going through the casting process, we started to realize that Elizabeth Mitchell was going to be involved, we’re like, ” No, maybe we need to go a little bit more man’s man..” What’s bizarre is that literally, when we just came back from ABC and we had had that discussion, Joel Gretsch called me and just said, ” Hey, what’s happening? What are you doing right now?” Just out of the blue.. And I’m like, ” It’s funny you should call.. What are you doing right now?” So there was no particular design to go out and look for genre actors.. It just so happened that A, folks were available.. B, they were perfect for the roles and C, they happened to be in genre shows in the past.. I think it’s a nice thing.. It’s wonderful for us.. We get 4400 fans and Firefly fans and LOST fans.. We’re hoping to collect all those fan bases and put it in one ginmorous take control of the world fanbase..

Q: What themes of racial relations did you set out to infuse in the script?
SP: There was really no intention to set out any kind of idea of racial relationship.. There was a strange question in the audience..

JH: You mean between Visitor and human as the races?

Q: Is it an intentional theme, the persecution of minorities?
SP: No, in fact it’s not.. The idea is that yes, the Visitors, certainly in the beginning of the pilot are seen as these terrific people come from another planet and they’re bringing all kinds of gifts and everyone’s on board very quickly.. As we all know, I’m not giving anything away, Visitors have a very different agenda about what it is that they need to do and that does not bode well for us.. So really, yes.. In fact, you saw some in the pilot, that there are protests.. Not everybody’s on board.. There are protests about them.. People are thinking wait a minute, everything’s happened a little too fast.. You’ll see that growth throughout the beginning of the series.. You’ll see more and more people dissatisfied and Anna having to try and find a way to quell all that.. In fact, you could look at the Visitors certainly as a new minority that has shown up.. So you can sort of play to some of those themes in terms of when they want to try to do something that we know as, ‘ Oh my God, don’t let them do that,’ they can say, ” Well, we’re bringing gifts.. We’re bringing you all these wonderful things.. Why wouldn’t you?” So there’s play back and forth between people who are protesting and people who are not protesting..

Q: Are you afraid of the reaction from old V fans?
JH: I wouldn’t say that we’re scared of their reaction.. From my perspective, we want to engage them and tell a story that has similar themes but this is a very different show.. As Scott said on the panel, we’re not trying to retread what already was done for a specific time frame and played well during that time.. We’re on a different period now.. Our audience has different expectations so you want to build a show that touches on concepts that were in the original, aliens are here but move it past in a different direction.. Tell new stories to engage not only the original V audience but also new audience and try to widen it out as much as you could..

SP: I think the audience that does remember the show, to me, I would come just out of curiosity to see what’s the new version of this.. Listen, you can’t please everybody all the time.. We can’t force anybody to watch the show.. If they feel like this is not doing the old one honor, they’re not going to watch the show.. The good news for them is that there is still the box set of the old DVDs and they can watch the original as often as they want.. We hope though, before making that decision, they would at least give our show a chance and come and look at it, see what it’s about and give it a few episodes.. If you really hate it then you’re going to turn it off.. And if you don’t, then you’re going to watch it and hopefully become a huge fan..

Q: Also the originals were designed as miniseries.. How do you approach stories from a potential 7 year standpoint?
SP: There’s a pretty in depth plan involved in terms of whether we’re doing 13 episodes or 22 episodes in a season, that we want to try to call them, in our minds they’re sort of chapters.. They sort of have a beginning, middle and end.. We’re looking to put game changers throughout so that when we come back for another season, it changes things up dramatically.. I think that in terms of the miniseries versus series aspect, because we know right away we’re going for the long term in success.. I think the old series may have made a mistake in becoming sort of a war picture, where it was battles every week and a lot of action, running around with guns and trying to take over..

JH: Plausibility has played a pretty big role in the development of this.. You want people to ask plausibly in situations.. When you get into the battle of the week, how plausible is that to sustain and for you as an audience viewer to go, ” Okay, that really could happen..” It’s hard..

Q: Have there been any overtures to original cast members to get them to show up?
SP: You know, I personally love the idea.. I think that there is probably a world where that will occur at some point.. We still need to figure out in what capacity.. There are a lot of decisions that need to be made that are also predicated on factors above our creative needs.. There’s studios and networks and so forth involved but I think personally it’s an awesome idea and I would love to try and cycle in some folks, a tip of the hat to the old audience..

Q: How has 9/11 informed the new V?
SP: You know, 9/11 really informs my storytelling.. 4400 was very similar in that vein.. I think that’s maybe why I gravitated towards V when it came my way because to me, I just remember sitting watching television in tears, having never been to New York in my life and not knowing anybody directly involved in what happened, but everybody was affected by the exact same event in the exact same moment.. Then to see all of these different aspects of all these different stories that people brought to it was incredibly moving to me.. So to me, I love that storytelling.. To have a large ensemble cast, they’re all affected by one spectacular, and I don’t mean that necessarily in a good way, but a huge event that affects everybody’s lives, and then to see how that trickles down to their existence and their realities.. Then in a show like this, what’s really fun is you get these unexpected crosses.. You’ll see characters that are in completely different storylines that will, through a very plausible way, cross each other in an unexpected way.. In fact, we’re discovering these in the writer’s room every day.. We’re like, ” How about if these two cross because this person’s walking this way and they’re kind of at the same event..” So I think that’s going to be a lot of fun to see too..

Q: How many have you written?
SP: We’re in our third episode right now.. I wrote the first one with actually an old mentor of mine, Sam Egan.. We have an awesome writer’s room.. Jeff Bell has come aboard the show and I couldn’t be happier.. He’s a terrific guy, he’s immensely talented and so we’re breaking three.. We’re into sort of talking about four.. The first one’s written, the second one’s being written so we’re moving along..

JH: I’ve been in the writer’s room.. It’s a very diverse group of people, very sharp.. Reading the next episode that came out of there, the hotness, take it from me.. It’s going the way, as an audience viewer, because I’m sort of looking at this as what I’d like to see, it’s really trying to capture the potential, because I think people who see the pilot see the potential for how cool it could be.. We run with it.. They’re really doing it.. Scott and team are really doing it..

SP: What’s really gratifying is when we turned in the first draft to the network and the studio, we got back, ” We always knew this was a series but now we really understand what kind of series this is going to be..” What you were seeing, is it going to be a war picture every week? We told them no, it wouldn’t be every week.. So they were like, ” Well, what’s it going to be..” I think the first episode you realize, after seeing two of them back to back, you start to understand the direction the show’s going..

Q: Will we see more inside the mothership?
SP: Hell yeah.. Yes, yes. What we’re developing is the ability to show you very different aspects of the ship.. We have a terrific piece of technology that basically, none of the ship exists.. It’s all green screen.. It only exists in a computer so say, that hallway where they had their talk, where Chad and Marcus had their talk.. That hallway was constructed in a virtual world, a virtual reality world but the technology gives us the ability to drop the camera anywhere in that map and point it and we see on the screen exactly what it would look like if it were in the real world.. If somebody’s walking across and the camera tracks them, the background will shift as it should in a shot.. It really gives us the opportunity to explore that world, not be like a weather man against a green screen and not be able to interact.. It’s really exciting..

JH: That actually fuels story.. I’ll get back on my sci-fi soapbox which is great sci – fi always has this element of discovery.. What better place to do it than on the ship?

Q: What are your thoughts on the idea of the Visitors recruiting our youth?
SP: It was a little tip of the hat to the original as well but the youth, I think, Jeff has a great saying.. ” Youth often will look at things in very black and white terms.. It’s either great or it’s terrible as it’s good or it’s bad.. As you get older you start to see the shades a little bit more between things..”

Q: In a way they’re right..
SP: Absolutely.. There’s a great argument to be made on both sides.. You see in Tyler and Erika’s scene.. Tyler just thinks his mom doesn’t get it.. He just thinks you’re set in your ways, you don’t want to explore anything, you don’t want to give any new idea a chance.. Why are you criticizing this so easily? Her point is why are you embracing this so quickly? It’s an interesting divide of generations..

Q: What kind of mom will she be? They can’t just fight every week..
SP: No, they’re not.. In fact, one of the great dynamics I think that really helps us is that Erika is accused by her son of never being there because she’s an FBI agent in the counterterrorism division.. So at three o’clock in the morning when the phone rings, she has to go.. If it’s in the middle of the afternoon and they were going to do something.. She’s got to drop it and go.. This has affected him for however many years and it’s coming out in this scene.. Now, in addition to that, she needs to be falling into the leadership roles of leading the resistance so she’s going to be struggling to find ways of keeping her son safe and making sure that everything’s okay with him, but still being pulled in an even bigger direction so it’s going to be a huge struggle for her to try and keep that relationship viable because she can’t really tell her son what’s going on..

Q: What kind of tie – ins do you have planned?
JH: Honestly, my answer is it’s top secret.. But, just understand this that from the very beginning when we were working together, we always considered these other mediums and these other opportunities.. So the story that’s been built, the universe that’s been built is really designed to support all these other things without interfering with each other and there’s an eye towards that.. At some point after the show, everybody understand where it’s going, what we’re doing, you’ll start to see some of these things happening.. I know the studio and the network are very supportive of that.. Also, I make a big point to talk about the online community out there and the stuff that they do in supporting that along with the whole thing.. So try to figure out ways to do some cross integration between what people are doing, what the fans are doing and making that part of the show is something we’ve been thinking about since the very beginning..

SP: And there are great ways for this, as Jace was saying, to directly relate to the show as well as live in its own universe which is I think really cool and exciting because it’s not just a, ” Hey, you should go watch the show “ kind of thing.. I’s a much more complex and sophisticated campaign that’s being planned..

JH: We’re not going to miss a beat on that.. We really want it.. That’s a very important thing at least to me.. It’s just sitting there..

The Pittsburgh Post – Gazette have recently conducted an interview with Jane Badler ( Diana from V: The Original ).. During the interview, they spoke about Jane’s music, acting and V.. Badler talks about reaching out to the producers of the new V and what role she might play if she were to show up on V: The New Series..

” When I heard it was picked up as a series, part of me was so aware of the passage of time,” Badler, 55, said in a phone interview during a visit last month with her family in New Jersey.. ” I feel this ownership because I created the role and we all feel like this journey we did together and suddenly you’re not involved, at least not to begin with.. It was sort of a painful feeling..”

” They know there is a huge amount of fans, and I’m not talking about people in my age group but people in their 30s who watch television and would be very cheated not to have at least one or two characters brought back,” Badler said.. ” I’m not saying I’m the one, I just know it’s very important to connect them in some way..”

” I definitely think they’re looking for a different character,” Badler said.. ” I don’t think they’re interested in bringing me back in the same guise.. I think they want more of a surprise element so everyone would go, ‘Whoa!’ I think that’s more interesting to them and having it done so it makes total sense with lots of integrity.. I’m sure I would be a Visitor but if I was going to be part of a storyline maybe I would be a judge or a lawyer but that wouldn’t be who I really am, it would be something twisted..”

Jane recently sat down at a lunch meeting with Executive Producer of V: The New Series, Jace Hall..

Badler sings the praises of V creator Kenneth Johnson, who’s trying to launch V feature film based on his novel V: The Second Generation..

” There’s no one like him,” Badler said.. ” He created the first [ V miniseries ] and that was the real deal, the multi – dimensional one.. The impact has been extraordinary and no one could have believed that all these years later how it will not die.. So many people were touched and moved by it. I think the series had much less impact on people.. For me it was fun to do because my character has the most fun of everyone: She was evil and bisexual and powerful but really [ The series ] was very lightweight in comparison to the mini – series.. When you look back in history, it’s definitely the miniseries that will hold up..”

ABC has released it’s official description of the V: The New Series ” Pilot “

THE HIGHLY ANTICIPATED SERIES PREMIERE OF “V“..
ARRIVES TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 3 ON ABC..

Elizabeth Mitchell, Scott Wolf, Morena Baccarin, Morris Chestnut, Joel Gretsch Among Stars..

V is a re – imagining of the 1980s’ miniseries about the world’s first encounter with an alien race.. With huge spaceships simultaneously appearing over 29 cities around the world, the Visitors (or V’s) seem to promote a message of peace.. Through their generous offer to share advanced technology, the V’s quickly build a following that may be overlooking a more malevolent agenda.. The premiere of V, from Warner Bros. Television, airs TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 3 ( 8:00 – 9:00 p.m., ET ), on ABC..

In the premiere episode, ” Pilot,” an image of Anna ( Morena Baccarin ), the leader of the V’s, is projected worldwide as she speaks about everyone joining together and no longer being divided by country or separated by fear.. She wants us all to unite, and is counting on a very important component of human nature – devotion.. At first considered a threat, the V’s quickly become a fascination and a link to things that lay just beyond our reach. For Tyler (Logan Huffman), a teenaged boy, the V’s are his ticket to being a part of something big and something that offers hope.. To Chad ( Scott Wolf ), an egotistical news anchor who wants to further his career, his exclusive interview with Anna begins his desire to dominate the airwaves.. Father Jack ( Joel Gretsch ), a priest with questioning faith, is hesitant to believe in the Visitors’ righteousness and goes outside of the church in search of the truth.. There are other dissidents who believe the Visitors aren’t who they say they are, including Ryan ( Morris Chestnut ), who is faced with a life – altering decision when the V’s show up.. And to FBI Counter Terrorist Agent Erica Evans ( Elizabeth Mitchell ), who discovers, while investigating a terrorist cell, what lurks beneath the alarmingly human exterior of the Visitors, resisting this new world has never been more important – and never has there been more at stake.. This truly is the dawning of a new day..

V stars Elizabeth Mitchell as Erica Evans, Morris Chestnut as Ryan Nichols, Joel Gretsch as Father Jack, Lourdes Benedicto as Valerie, Logan Huffman as Tyler Evans, Laura Vandervoort as Lisa, with Morena Baccarin as Anna, and Scott Wolf as Chad Decker..

Guest starring in ” Pilot ” are Alan Tudyk as Dale Maddox, Jesse Wheeler as Brandon, Britt Irvin as Haley Gordon, David Richmond – Peck as Georgie, Christopher Shyer as Marcus, Scott Hylands as Father Travis and Stefan Arngrim as Roy..

V is produced by The Scott Peters Company and HDFilms in association with Warner Bros. Television.. Scott Peters ( who wrote the pilot ), Jeffrey Bell, Steve Pearlman and Jace Hall are executive producers.. The pilot was directed by Yves Simoneau.. V is broadcast in 720 Progressive ( 720P ), ABC’s HDTV format, with 5.1 channel sound and Spanish subtitles.. A TV Parental guideline will be assigned closer to airdate.. For more information on V, please visit ABC.com..
